Norwin area: Mulch sale, egg hunt, more
Mulch sale with
home delivery is offered
Boy Scout Troop 284 of Irwin is holding a mulch sale fundraiser, with bags to be delivered in the 15642 zip code area the first two weekends of April.
Black, brown and red mulch is available in 2 cubic feet bags for $4.50 per bag, with a five bag minimum. Those ordering in bulk - 25 bags - will pay $105.
Orders will be accepted online until March 28 at Troop284Irwin.com or by mail to Boy Scout Troop 284, 1670 Craig Drive, Irwin, 15642.
North Huntingdon
hires police officer
North Huntingdon police will hire a Penn Hills police officer, pending the results of the candidate’s physical and psychological exams.
Commissioners extended the conditional offer on March 16 to hire Andrew Carter of North Huntingdon. His tentative starting date is April 4, according to Chief Robert Rizzo.
The department continues “to deal with a number of long-term officer injuries and mid-term medical issues,” Rizzo said in his report to the township commissioners. Six of the department’s officers are off work or are on light-duty responsibilities. Delaying the hiring until later this year will not help mid-term staffing issues, Rizzo stated.
“The officers’ timelines to return to full-duty status range from months to unknown at this time,” Rizzo said in his report.
The decision to hire another officer comes after the township last month hired Erik Berg and Troy Pecina. The officers will undergo a 14-week field training program and a one-year probationary period, Rizzo said.
St. Agnes Church
to hold Easter egg hunt
St. Agnes Catholic Church in North Huntingdon will hold an Easter egg hunt for children age 12 and younger at 11:30 a.m. April 23 in the grassy area outside the church’s Resurrection Hall, 11400 St Agnes Lane.
Lunch will be served and prizes will be available.
Parents who will bring their children are asked to contact the church office at 724-863-2626, by April 15 or email Marti at mditoppa@dioceseofgreensburg.org
North Huntingdon church
gets environmental designation
The New Hope Presbyterian Church off Lincoln Way, North Huntingdon, has become certified as a Presbyterian Church (USA) Earth Care Congregation by the denomination’s Hunger Program through February 2023.
The congregation affirmed an Earth Care Pledge to integrate environmental practices and thinking into their worship, education, facilities and outreach. They will celebrate this honor on April 10, with a special time in the worship service to take the pledge.
The certification is designed to recognize churches that make the commitment to take seriously God’s charge to “till and keep” the garden, the church said.
New Hope Presbyterian Church is just one of the 292 churches in the Presbyterian Church (USA) that chose to dedicate themselves to care for the earth this year.
