Queen of Angels students win in engineering contest

The sixth grade class at Queen of Angels Catholic School in North Huntingdon brought home three awards in the recent Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania’s Future City Competition.

Students won three awards at the virtual competition last month: Best Futuristic City, Outstanding First Year Award and the Excellence in Resilience Engineering Award.

The students worked through the engineering design process and project management planning phases in the Future City contest. The students had to use three principles of circular economy to design a futuristic waste-free city in the challenge,” A Waste-Free Future.” They worked collaboratively in conducting research, brainstorming solutions, designing and building a futuristic city and presenting their “city” to a panel of judges.

Former police officer to speak at church

Emmit Green, a former North Versailles police officer, is scheduled to speak at a Men’s “Pizza and Wings” Fellowship at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Norwin Alliance Church, 10585 Farview Drive, North Huntingdon.

For those interested in attending, contact the church at 724-864-1570.

Chili Cookoff & Wing Thing fundraiser planned

After being forced to go virtual last year because of the covid-related restrictions, the Norwin Rotary will hold its 12th annual Chili Cookoff & Wing Thing fundraiser for its Back Pack/Gift Card project from 5 to 8 p.m. March 3 in various locations in downtown Irwin.

Chili and wing lovers will be able to sample the food at The Colonial Grille, Brandy’s on Main, the Irwin Masonic Hall along Main Street and the First United Methodist Church at Oak and Third street, while voting and donating toward their favorite dish.

The cooks will be able to compete for trophies, bragging rights and a bit of fun in promoting one’s restaurant or catering service while providing needy children with nutritional, child-friendly food at home over the weekend. The Norwin Rotary’s efforts help those students in need at the Sheridan Terrace Elementary School in North Huntingdon.

The fundraising initiative has provided children with the food or gift cards redeemable at Aldi’s in North Huntingdon.

The admission-free event is the Rotary’s primary fundraiser for the program, which is in its 12th year. This year’s goal is $10,000.

Supporters can serve as a sponsor or enter a team to make chili or wings, the Rotary said.
