Norwin band festival kicks off upcoming events

Band to perform show preview at festival

The Norwin High School marching band will give its fans a preview of the show it will perform this fall during the Norwin Band Preview Show and Food Truck Festival from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Knights Stadium on the high school campus in North Huntingdon.

The band will perform from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Those attending will be able to get refreshments from about six food trucks that will be at the festival.

A portion of all sales from the food trucks will be donated to the band, which will use the money to help pay for a trip on Nov. 11 to the Bands of America Grand National Championship in Indianapolis. About 100 bands are expected to compete in the national event.

EMS to hold food truck fundraiser

Entertainment, food and drink will be available at the North Huntingdon EMS Food Truck Rally from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at Oak Hollow Park, Timothy Drive.

The Dynasonics, a local polka band, and The Roadhouse, a rock and country band, will provide the entertainment.

The proceeds will be used to benefit the EMS’ free care fund program by offsetting the cost for car seats, cardio pulmonary resuscitation/first aid training and the community paramedicine program.

Irwin hires cop, code enforcement officer

Irwin officials recently hired a police officer, a code enforcement officer and planning and zoning manager.

Charles Hume was hired at council’s Aug. 11 meeting as the full-time planning and zoning manager at a rate of $20.69 an hour, replacing Justin Kachmarek, who left the borough for another job.

Matt Sever was hired as a full-time code enforcement officer at a rate of $18 an hour, replacing Donald Harvey, who left the position in May.

David Pine was hired as a part-time police officer at a rate of $22.88 an hour. Pine replaces Eric Ziska, who was hired recently as a full-time officer.

Lions Club sells chicken barbecue

The Stewartsville Lions Club will hold a chicken barbecue at 11 a.m. Aug. 29 at Holiday Travel, Route 30 across from Norwin Town Square.

A chicken dinner will cost $8 and will includes applesauce, roll, beverage and dessert.

Take out only orders will be brought to the customer’s vehicle.

St. Agnes Church to hold Mass for first responders

St. Agnes Church in North Huntingdon will hold a Blue Mass to honor all local first responders at 11 a.m. Sept. 11.

There will be blessing of the vehicles following the Mass.

The Mass also will remember the fallen heroes. Those who want a person remembered should email their name, position and any other pertinent information to kbrown@dioceseofgreensburg.org.

Those first responders that plan to have a vehicle at the Mass are asked to contact the parish office at 724-863-2626, to ensure parking accommodations are made.

Peach festival set in West Newton

A peach festival featuring cobbler is planned 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at the Lions Field House, 507 Pittsburgh St., West Newton.

The West Newton First Church of God is sponsoring the festival, which will have hot dogs, sloppy joes, barbecued pulled pork, baked beans, potato or macaroni salad, cake, ice cream and beverages.
