Norwin briefs: Heritage Trail festival slated; Library to present ambulance service story; Seniors plan bus trip to Mackinac Island

Westmoreland Heritage Trail Community Festival

The annual Westmoreland Heritage Trail Community Festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 3 in Trafford, and this year will include a poker run.

In addition to basket raffles, a DJ, fishing for kids, food vendors, ice cream, face-painting and more, the festival will include a poker run, where participants can stop at checkpoints along the trail on a 12-mile bike ride or 4-mile walk/run, and choose a playing card. The best hands at the end will receive prizes.

Registration prior to May 26 is $25 per person. Day-of registration is $30, and begins at 9 a.m. The poker run will begin at 10 a.m., with awards ceremonies and raffles at noon.

Norwin library to present ambulance service story

The story of the Freedom House Ambulance Service in Pittsburgh, the first emergency medical service in the nation to be staffed by paramedics with training beyond first aid, will be presented at 6 p.m. May 24 at the Norwin Public Library, 100 Caruthers Lane, Irwin.

“The First Responders, The Story of Freedom House Ambulance Service,” will be presented by John Moon, a Freedom House paramedic.

The ambulance service was founded by the late Dr. Peter Safar, who worked with Freedom House Enterprises to train Black men and women from the Hill District as paramedics to deliver emergency medical care.

Seniors plan bus trip to Mackinac Island

A two-night stay on Mackinac Island, Mich., is part of the North Huntingdon Seniors bus trip scheduled for Sept. 22-27.

The cost is $1,700 per person, based on double occupancy of the hotel room.

There will be lunch at the Grand Hotel and an overnight stay at Soaring Eagle Casino with a $30 bonus play and $20 food voucher. A stop at the Bronner Xmas Wonderland also is planned.

A deposit will be required to make a reservation.

Lions to hold fundraiser

Fans of murder mystery theater can enjoy a night of comedy, mystery and dinner with a performance of “It’s Murder, Charlie Brown” at 6 p.m. May 13 at the Circleville Volunteer Fire Department’s social hall, 129 Robbins Station Road, North Huntingdon.

The show will be performed by Mystery’s Most Wanted.

The $45 admission price covers the show and the dinner with beer, wine and soft drinks. The doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Norwin Lions Club to raise money for its Kitty Sack program that provide nutritious food to food insecure Norwin students over the weekends.

Tickets are available at Synergy Hair Salon and Spa, 720 Robbins Station Rd., North Huntingdon and the Norwin Chamber of Commerce, 321 Main St., Irwin.

Car cruise to help pet group

Fans of car cruises and pets can help Pet Friends of Irwin by joining in the Save-A-Pet Car Cruise from 2 p.m. to dusk June 3 at Quinn Brewing Co. in the Banco Business Park, 3000 Commerce Loop, North Huntingdon.

Registration is $5. Trophies will be awarded for Top 10 cars and dash plaques for the first 100 cars. The event will feature 50/50, basket auction, vendors, and food trucks with music by DJ Gary Ed of Georgio’s Oldies Cafe. Attendees can bring a can/bag of dog or cat food for a chance to win a lottery ticket tree.
