Irwin police to get 6% raise in 2023
Irwin’s police officers will get a 6% raise beginning in January in the first year of a new contract.
The borough recently approved a three-year contract with the Irwin Police Officers’ Relief Association. It raises wages by 4% in 2024 and another 4% in 2025, said Shari Martino, borough manager. The relief association represents the police officers in collective bargaining.
The contract covers five full-time police officers and the chief, Martino said.
Lt. Mike Thomas, president of the association, could not be reached for comment.
In addition to approving the contract, the borough added a full-time officer, Justin Woods, at a rate of $25.62.
The hiring of an additional full-time officer will reduce the demand for part-time help, Martino said. The borough has one part-time officer.
“It gives us more flexibility and more stability in scheduling,” Chief Dan Wensel said.
Assistant borough manager resigns
Irwin Borough’s assistant manager has resigned from her job.
Stacie Santimyer’s resignation was accepted at a borough council meeting last week, effective immediately.
Santimyer was hired in September 2019, after Shari Martino, who had been the assistant manager, was promoted to the manager’s position the previous month.
Katelind Sartori is the only other administrative employee in the borough office. She was promoted in August to a full-time position as the billing and lien supervisor and assistant code enforcement officer at an annual salary of $31,200.
2 accused of damaging soybean fields
Two Westmoreland County men are accused by state police of driving four-wheelers through Somerset County soybean fields last month, causing $2,500 in damage.
The two men, both 19, from Irwin and Jeannette, were not named in a news release about the Sept. 3 incident.
Troopers said the pair drove onto two properties in the New Berry Road area of Addison Township. They were confronted by the property owners who were unsuccessful in stopping the damage.
The two men and four-wheelers were later found at a nearby campsite and they admitted to driving through the fields, according to state police. They are facing agricultural criminal mischief charges.
The rural township is south of Confluence and touches Pennsylvania’s border with Maryland. New Berry Road is just off Route 40 and runs along Youghiogheny River Lake.
