North Huntingdon bans tobacco use in parks

North Huntingdon wants to put an end to people using tobacco products in the township’s parks.

Commissioners on June 6 authorized advertisement of an ordinance that would prohibit the use of tobacco products in township parks and would allow police to cite violators. Fines could be as much as $600, said Jeff Silka, township manager.

Before any ordinance could take effect, commissioners would have to approve it at a public meeting, possibly in July.

Seasonal laborers hired for parks work

Three men have been hired as seasonal laborers for North Huntingdon’s parks and recreation department.

Aaron Bowen, Christopher Costa and Aiden McLaughlin were approved for the seasonal positions, which pay $10 an hour, by the commissioners on June 16 .

In parks and recreation business, the commissioners accepted the resignation of Janet Salamon from the parks and recreation board and appointed Paul Diegelman. Diegelman was the former Irwin recreation director from 1986 to 1990, then a member of borough council from 1991-1995.

Chicken barbecue sale set June 27

The Stewartsville Lions Club will hold a drive-thru chicken barbecue sale at Holiday Travel, 12239 Route 30, across from Norwin Towne Square, beginning 11 a.m. June 27, until sell-out.

The cost is $8 and consists of a one-half chicken, applesauce, roll and beverage. Customers are asked to remain in their vehicles.

West Newton music festival slated

A free music festival will be held June 26 at the Vine Street Park in West Newton.

The festival begins at noon with music by Andrew Bicsey.

Patrons will be able to purchase food and refreshments from food trucks.

The event is sponsored by Downtown West Newton Inc., Big Black Grill and Procaffeination Coffee.
