When Irwin’s annual Memorial Day parade was canceled because of the covid-19 restrictions against large gathering, the The Norwin Junior Air Force ROTC cadets, a group of about 120 students, and the Norwin Student Council, decided to honor the Norwin community’s veterans in a different way.

The student cadets thanked veterans by hanging a banner — “In Memory of Many … In Honor of All” — on the side of a First Student bus that transports Norwin students, and parked the bus at a vacant lot near the J. Howard Snyder Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 781 along in North Huntingdon, said Jennifer Kerrigan, president of the Norwin JROTC boosters.

Kerrigan said she and Patrick McLaughlin, a Norwin High School teacher and student council advisor, worked together to make the arrangements and get the banner printed.

James Varner, manager of the local First Student bus garage, also was very supportive, Kerrigan said.
