Steel City Axe Throwers win medals at international contest
A North Huntingdon-based group of axe throwers from the region were skilled enough to capture several top finishes in an international axe-throwing competition held last month in Toronto.
The Steel City Axe Throwers, based out of Chill Axe at the Banco Industrial Park in North Huntingdon, had five winners in the International Axe Throwing Championship.
Nineteen throwers from the Pittsburgh area were among the elite throwers from across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Asia, said Jennifer Kerrigan a spokeswoman for the Steel City Throwers.
Dave Alviso of West View, placed first 1st place in the main throwing championship event, while Robert Oberley IV of Allison Park placed third overall.
Two women captures first place in events — Lisa Spoonhoward of Penn Borough in the Under 60 Average tournament and Adeline Kubicsek of Glenshaw in the Women’s Slayer Series.
Zak Petroff of Harrison City and Kirk Thomas of North Huntington placed second in the doubles throwing contest at their venue. Tim Stivers of Pittsburgh placed second in the Big Axes contest at the venue in which they competed.
Patrick Kerrigan of North Huntington finished fifth in Big Axe at the venue where he threw, while he and Adeline Kubicsek of Glenshaw, captured ninth place in doubles at their venue
Steel City Axe Throwers also are committed to giving back to their community, said Jennifer Kerrigan. They organize local fundraisers and participate in charity events for those in need.
The team will host a two-day fundraising event on July 18 and 19 at Chill Axe, 3000 Commerce Loop, Suite No. 3201, North Huntingdon, in memory of the sister of one of their throwers, Kerrigan said.
There will be a music bingo night on July 18 and a double elimination axe throwing tournament on July 19. All proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics.
