Elderly pedestrian dies after struck by shuttle bus in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood
An elderly pedestrian died shortly after she was struck by a shuttle bus Thursday afternoon in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, officials said.
The incident happened near the 3400 block of Terrace Street at about 3:30 p.m., Pittsburgh Public Safety officials report.
Mary Flaherty, 76, of Monroeville was identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office Friday morning. She was struck in the street by a UPMC shuttle bus turning left onto Terrace Street from Buffalo Street, Public Safety spokesman Maurice Matthews said.
“The driver stayed on scene and cooperated with police,” Matthews said.
By the time first responders arrived, a nurse was performing CPR on the woman, according to Matthews.
Medics rushed the injured woman to nearby UPMC Presbyterian hospital, where she initially was reported in critical condition.
She was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after 4 p.m.
Terrace Street was shut down for more than two hours while police investigated. The road reopened shortly after 6 p.m.

No further details were immediately available about the incident.
UPMC released a statement expressing its sympathy.
“This is a tragedy for our community, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family of the deceased and with all who witnessed this terrible event,” said Andrea Kunicky, a public relations manager for UPMC. “Pittsburgh Police are leading the investigation and have our full cooperation.”
