A 21-year-old pedestrian who was struck by a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus in Oakland Monday night is “up and walking” and expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday, a transit agency spokesman said.
First responders took the woman, who authorities have not named, to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in critical but stable condition after a PRT bus struck her while she walked on a Fifth Avenue crosswalk around 7 p.m. on Monday, spokesman Adam Brandolph said.
The extent of her injuries remains unclear. Brandolph said the woman “was reported to be up and walking” Tuesday.
The 58-Greenfield bus was turning left onto Fifth Avenue at Neville Street when it hit the woman, Brandolph said. The bus had been traveling from PRT’s East Liberty garage to begin its route near Carnegie Mellon University.
There were two people on the bus when it struck the woman. Neither rider was injured.
The bus later was towed to the garage and quarantined for investigators.
Brandolph said the bus driver, “a 25-year PRT veteran,” was placed on paid leave while the transit agency investigates.
The driver, who Brandolph did not name, also will undergo drug and alcohol screenings, per the agency’s protocol.
