A pedestrian suffered a minor injury Tuesday morning when she was struck by a vehicle near an intersection prone to accidents that sits amid two UPMC hospitals and the University of Pittsburgh’s Oakland campus.
The woman, who authorities have not named, walked in front of the vehicle around 8:30 a.m., Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Emily Bourne told TribLive. She was “conscious, alert and speaking with medics and officers” after the incident on Lothrop Street.
The pedestrian had minor ankle pain and was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation, Bourne said. The driver, who authorities also did not identify, remained on scene.
No charges are expected.
Vehicles have hit at least four pedestrians, killing two of them, in that section of Oakland since 2020. Last year, the city’s Fatal Crash Response Group visited that section of Oakland and touted efforts “to reduce conflicts and confusion” nearby.
Lothrop Street is just two blocks long and passes through parts of Pitt’s campus and between UPMC’s Presbyterian and Montefiore hospitals.
It is unclear if Tuesday’s injured pedestrian worked at or was visiting either of those hospitals. A UPMC spokesman did not return a phone call or email Tuesday seeking comment.
It also is unclear if they were a Pitt student or staffer. Pitt Police responded to the incident but handed over the matter to city police, a university spokesman told TribLive. He declined further comment.
In 2020, a 76-year-old woman was killed after a shuttle bus hit her on Terrace Street, which intersects with Lothrop Street. Three years later, a UPMC employee was killed when a UPMC shuttle hit her near the same intersection — Terrace Street at Sutherland Drive.
In January 2025, a vehicle struck a pedestrian walking on nearby Fifth Avenue. Just last month, a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus hit and critically injured a woman on the same roadway.
