In brief: AARP meeting, transportation proposals sought and more in Penn Hills
AARP
Plum AARP will hold the first meeting of the new season on Sep. 12 at Unity Community Church, beginning at noon. The program will be the talented Twan Moore, performing rhythm and blues. There will be cake and coffee/tea following the business meeting. If not already paid, 2023-24 dues of $15 are due.
Plum AARP is a social/service club open to members of Plum, Penn Hills, Monroeville and surrounding areas. Meetings are held at noon on the second Tuesday of each month except July at Unity Community Church, followed by cake and coffee. There is a program (entertainment or speaker) nearly every month, as well as a Christmas Party, a May Luncheon, and a Summer Social in August. Newcomers are welcome to attend a meeting, to check out AARP and hopefully, make new friends. For more information, call Mary Lou at 724-327-8265.
Quilting for Newbees
Are you a beginner who has always wanted to quilt or an old hand wanting to brush up on quilting skills and hone precision? Join us for a new 10-month Newbees quilting class sponsored by Quilt Company East Quilting Guild.
Beginning Sept. 9, class is held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, September through June, at Monroeville Public Library in the lower level conference room past the children’s department.
Participants must sign up in advance. Space is limited. Class is free to members of Quilt Company East and $20 for nonmembers.
Prerequisites for the class include a sewing machine that you can bring to class. It must be in good working order with the ability to drop feed dogs when necessary. You will need to purchase a specific quilt pattern as well as the fabric to make a small quilt. Finally, there will be a few basic quilting tools, such as a rotary cutter, a rotary cutting mat, and several basic rulers that you will need to have for class. Details will be announced in class.
