Zoning hearing board member resigns

Joe Tamburrino resigned April 25 from the Penn Hills Zoning Hearing Board, according to Damian Butler-Buccilli, a planner with the municipality’s Department of Planning and Economic Development.

Three days earlier, TribLive reported that Tamburrino had moved from Penn Hills to Verona. That made his service in violation of the home rule charter and state law.

Tamburrino joined the board in 2019 and most recently was reappointed by Mayor Pauline Calabrese.

His resignation leaves the board with three of five members, two of whom are serving on expired terms.

Ministry stocks seasonal clothes

The Clothesline Ministry in Penn Hills is stocked with clothing for the warmer seasons.

The free ministry is open from 10 a.m. to noon every Thursday at Mt. Hope Community Presbyterian Church, 12106 Frankstown Road.

People are welcome to stop by and pick up spring and summer clothes.

Senior citizens invited to free fair

Penn Hills is celebrating Older Americans Month with a free Senior Fair and open house on May 17.

The Penn Hills Senior Center and Juniper Village are hosting the event in the first-floor activity room of the senior center, 147 Jefferson Road.

A representative from UPMC will conduct several health tests, including ones for bone density and blood pressure.

Attendees are encouraged to stay for lunch.

Nominees sought for Rosedale Beach Club’s DeLuca award

The Rosedale Beach Club Board of Directors is seeking nominations for its second annual Tony DeLuca Award, which grants a family membership to a person who dedicates their time to serving the community without seeking recognition.

Nominees should possess the qualities DeLuca embodied in his everyday life: serving, helping and supporting others with kindness and respect. Rosedale Beach Club will choose one nominee to award a membership.

To nominate someone, send a letter describing how the person embodies the above values.

‘Bowl for the Cure’ set at Nesbit’s Lanes

The 15th annual “Bowl for the Cure” will be held beginning at 9 a.m. May 18 at Nesbit’s Lanes, 3501 Leechburg Road, in Plum.

The cost is $20 per person or $100 per lane and includes bowling, shoes, pizza, pop, random drawings, a 50-50 drawing, basket auction and door prizes.

Proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a nonprofit that raises money to help those diagnosed with breast cancer and their survivors.

Psychic fair planned

The next 3 Rivers Psychic Fair will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 11 at the Comfort Inn, 699 Rodi Road.

The fair, which is held four times a year, offers psychic, intuitive and medium readings as well as Reiki healers, energy healers and holistic products. Admission is $5. There will be a 50-50.

Japanese drumming group to perform

The Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania will present a drumming performance by Pittsburgh Taiko from 1 to 2 p.m. May 11 at Penn Hills Library, 1037 Stotler Road.

Pittsburgh Taiko performs Japanese ensemble drumming (kumidaiko). Its repertoire includes regional Japanese drumming styles arranged for the group as well as original compositions.

Free smoke detectors available to residents

State Rep. Joe McAndrew, D-Penn Hills, has teamed up with the American Red Cross to offer free smoke detectors to residents in Oakmont, Penn Hills, Plum and Verona.

The American Red Cross also will install the smoke detectors in your home for free.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly meets Tuesday evenings

The local chapter of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a support group to help those struggling with weight loss, meets Tuesday evenings at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1261 Pennsylvania Ave., in Oakmont. Meetings begin with a private weigh-in between 5:45 and 6:10 p.m.

Class of 1974 to gather

The Penn Hills High School Class of 1974 will have its 50th reunion at 6 p.m. June 8 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Downtown Pittsburgh.

The venue changed from the Monroeville DoubleTree, which recently announced its closure.

The cost is $65. The gathering will include appetizers, food stations, dessert, nonalcoholic beverages, a photo booth and a DJ. There will be a cash bar.

Household chemical collection scheduled

The Pennsylvania Resource Council will hold a household chemical collection from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 17 at Boyce Park in Plum.

Individuals can drop off automotive fluids, household cleaners, pesticides, paints and other household chemicals. A $20 fee covers disposal of up to 10 gallons or 50 pounds of material per vehicle. Loads exceeding 10 gallons and 50 pounds will be subject to additional fees.
