Members sought for various boards, commissions

Some of Penn Hills’ boards, committees and commissions are in need of new members.

Opportunities may or soon could be available on the Planning Commission, Shade Tree Commission, Traffic Safety Committee, Zoning Hearing Board, Recreation Advisory Board, Wilkinsburg-Penn Joint Water Authority, Personnel Board and Library Board.

Residents interested in joining any of the above entities should send a letter of interest with a brief bio to the municipal office, 102 Duff Road, or email Mayor Pauline Calabrese at pcalabrese@pennhills.org.

The Library Board also is soliciting candidates through an online form for its four vacancies. Board members are expected to stay up to date on library trends, provide fiscal stewardship and craft policies, among other duties listed in the job description.

Applications for the Library Board are due May 31.

Upgrades underway at Penn Hills Library

The Penn Hills Library, 1037 Stotler Road, installed new computers for public use May 1.

The library also is in the process of updating its Job and Career Resource Center. New additions there include a job and career binder with local job opportunities, as well as resume and cover letter worksheets.

Memorial Day Parade to start at 11:30 a.m.

Penn Hills’ annual Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 11:30 a.m. at 111 Erhardt Drive, the former St. Bartholomew Church. The route will move along Frankstown Road and onto Duff Road.

A memorial ceremony will be held at 12 p.m. at the Penn Hills Government Center, 102 Duff Road.

The parade will include a variety local performers, organizations and businesses. Spectators also can expect to see first responders, including police, EMS and six volunteer fire companies.

Registration to participate in the parade closes May 24.

Variety of programs for all ages on tap

The Penn Hills Library is spotlighting several of its many May programs for children, teens and adults. For a complete list and to register where required, visit pennhillslibrary.org.

CHILDREN

• Children’s Self Care: 5 to 5:45 p.m. May 14 and 21. During Mental Health Awareness Month in May, stop by the library for mindfulness tips and strategies as well as relaxing do-it-yourself activities. Registration is required.

• Magical Monarch Butterflies: 11:30 a.m. May 25. Children 6 to 11 are invited to learn about these amazing pollinators. A monarch caterpillar will be supplied, one per family, for children to take home and watch develop. Registration is required.

TEENS (open to children in grades 6 to 12)

• Learn Punch Needling: 4 to 5 p.m. May 20. Learn about punch needling and create your own mini fruit rug. No experience and no registration required. No registration is required.

• Make Your Own Cardboard Aquarium: 3:30 to 5 p.m. May 22. Use cardboard and paint to create your own desktop aquarium. All teens in grades 6 to 12 are welcome to attend. No registration is required.

• Sew Your Own Embroidered Garden: 3:30 to 5 p.m. May 29. Learn basic embroidery stitches and create a garden of embroidered flowers. No registration is required.

ADULTS

• Knitting and Fiber Arts Meetup: 11 a.m. May 18. Bring your knitting needles, crochet hooks and embroidery hoops to the library. Meet other fiber art enthusiasts and share your works in progress. No registration is required.

• Monarch Butterflies: 6 to 7 p.m. May 20. Celebrate spring with Dr. Maria Wheeler-Dubas as she discusses the migration of the monarch butterflies. Registration is required.

Bowl for the Cure set at Nesbit’s Lanes

The 15th annual Bowl for the Cure will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at Nesbit’s Lanes, 3501 Leechburg Road in Plum.

The cost is $20 per person or $100 per lane and includes bowling, shoes, pizza, pop, random drawings, a 50-50 drawing, basket auction and door prizes.

Proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a nonprofit that raises money to help those diagnosed with breast cancer and survivors.

Ministry stocks seasonal clothes

The Clothesline Ministry in Penn Hills is stocked with clothing for the warmer seasons. The free ministry is open from 10 a.m. to noon every Thursday at Mt. Hope Community Presbyterian Church, 12106 Frankstown Road.

Senior citizens invited to free fair

Penn Hills is celebrating Older Americans Month with a free Senior Fair and open house on May 17.

The Penn Hills Senior Center and Juniper Village are hosting the event in the first-floor activity room of the senior center, 147 Jefferson Road.

A representative from UPMC will conduct several health tests, including ones for bone density and blood pressure.

Attendees are encouraged to stay for lunch.

Nominees sought for Rosedale Beach Club’s DeLuca award

The Rosedale Beach Club Board of Directors is seeking nominations for its second annual Tony DeLuca Award, which grants a family membership to a person who dedicates their time to serving the community without seeking recognition.

Nominees should possess the qualities DeLuca embodied in his everyday life: serving, helping and supporting others with kindness and respect. Rosedale Beach Club will choose one nominee to award a membership.

Nominees do not need to be a current or previous member of the pool.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly meetings

The local chapter of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a support group to help those struggling with weight loss, meets Tuesday evenings at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1261 Pennsylvania Ave., in Oakmont. Meetings begin with a private weigh-in between 5:45 and 6:10 p.m. Anyone interested in joining can attend a meeting and decide if TOPS is right for them. Class of 1974 to gather June 8

The Penn Hills High School Class of 1974 will have its 50th reunion at 6 p.m. June 8 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Downtown Pittsburgh.

The cost is $65. The gathering will include appetizers, food stations, dessert, nonalcoholic beverages, a photo booth and a DJ. There will be a cash bar.

Household chemical collection scheduled

The Pennsylvania Resource Council will hold a household chemical collection from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 17 at Boyce Park in Plum.

Individuals can drop off automotive fluids, household cleaners, pesticides, paints and other household chemicals. A $20 fee covers disposal of up to 10 gallons or 50 pounds of material per vehicle. Loads exceeding 10 gallons and 50 pounds will be subject to additional fees.
