Longtime Penn Hills teacher James Schultz has died at the age of 64, district officials announced April 9.

He began teaching in the district in 2001, most recently Linton Middle School and high school science classes via the district’s cyber academy.

Superintendent Nancy Hines called Schultz “a true professional” and a wonderful man.

“I had the privilege and honor of working with him as his principal (at the high school) and now as superintendent,” Hines said. “Very committed, he played a key role in helping (the district) modify practices during the pandemic. … Very dedicated, he loved the community, loved kids, great teacher, more certifications than I had ever seen. He will absolutely be missed. Everybody loved Jim.”

Schultz lived in Penn Hills and was instrumental in setting up virtual learning for students and staff. He passed on April 8.

Grief counseling is available at both the middle and high schools with assistance from Mon Yough Community Services.

The district also offered its condolences via a post on its website and social media pages.

Schultz is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Klinefelter) Schultz; his children, James Schultz (Shannon), Michelle Isaak (Mike) and Sarah Schultz; six grandchildren, his father, his three brothers and one sister.

Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at MAURICE L. KNEE, LTD. FUNERAL HOME, 7663 Saltsburg Road (across from S & T Bank) in Plum. A funeral service will be held there Tuesday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Plum Creek Cemetery.
