A new business setting up shop in a space between Aldi and the movie theater in the Penn Hills Shopping Center had a setback Friday morning when the building’s roof caught fire.

Penn Hills Fire Marshal Chuck Miller said he suspects an electric sign belonging to Joy Joy Beauty and Hair Supply that sat atop the building overheated and caused the fire.

He ruled the blaze accidental and said there were no injuries.

The fire was reported around 6:30 a.m. on Friday. Miller said six Penn Hills fire stations and one from Monroeville had the fire under control within an hour.

“There’s probably a couple hundred thousand dollars worth in damage,” he said. “But they expect to get it repaired and opened up. But they are still moving boxes in, they haven’t even opened up for business yet.”

Contractors worked to clean up the business on Friday morning.

Efforts to reach the owners for comment failed.

The space next to Joy Joy is currently vacant and suffered some water damage as crews worked to put out the blaze, Miller said.

“It could have been a lot worse, the fire departments did a great job,” Miller said.
