News briefs: Penn Hills reminds residents to park off-street to assist snow-removal crews
Penn Hills is asking residents to refrain from parking on streets during snow events.
Keeping the streets cleard of parked cars will allow plow trucks and emergency vehicles to safely and efficiently make their way through residential streets.
Trib journalism scholarships available
Trib Total Media is now accepting applications for both the Scholarship for Diversity in Media and the Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship.
The Scholarship for Diversity in Media is open to high school seniors who are culturally, ethnically or racially diverse and are planning to study journalism, communication or English writing at a four-year college or university.
The scholarship will include financial assistance of up to $7,500 per year for four years, a guaranteed annual internship with Trib Total Media and an offer for full-time employment upon graduation.
The Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship is offered to high school or college students attending — or planning to attend — a four-year college or university to study journalism, English writing or communication. The recipient will earn up to $30,000 in scholarship money awarded in annual installments of up to $7,500, an annual internship with Trib Total Media and an offer for full-time employment upon graduation.

The deadline to apply is Jan. 31.
Holiday activities
• Letters to Santa: Participants can mail a letter to Santa to 102 Duff Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15235. Letters can also be emailed to santaclaus@pennhills.org. Include a name and address to receive a return letter from Santa.
• Lights display contest: Penn Hills residents are encouraged to participate in the contest for the best Christmas decorations in the municipality. To participate, call 412-798-2147 or email John at jscaglione@pennhills.org with your address.
Judging will take place Dec. 14 to 18, and prizes will be awarded to the top three decorated homes.
Parks closed
Parks and ball fields in Penn Hills, along with the restroom facilities at each, are closed for the season. Parks can still be used on a walk-in basis, however. The municipality reminded residents not to block park entrance gates.
