Penn Hills students will be adjusting to a no cellphone policy when they return to school on Aug. 29.

Superintendent Nancy Hines said the new policy comes after an observation of increased cell phone use within schools in the last year.

Hines said Linton Middle School did a test trial of the policy, and teachers said the environment was more positive and focused. Teachers reported fewer classroom and hallway disruptions. Students appreciated the break from messaging their friends both in and outside of the district, Hines said.

Before entering school and before student ID check, the students’ cellphones and any other communication devices, including smartwatches, will be stored and secured in a Yondr pouch.

At the end of the school day or when officially dismissed for the day, students will be able to unlock their Yondr pouch at the exit to access their phones.

“We are hopeful that we will see similar results at Penn Hills High School this year, once the students settle into a new school routine that is not reliant on cell phones and social media,” she said.

Hines said the health and safety plan for this school year will remain the same as the 2021-22 school year. Masks will be optional and social distancing will be encouraged in the classrooms and work areas.

“Penn Hills School District will continue to consult with Allegheny County Health Department regarding quarantine, isolation and more,” she said.

For staffing, the school district is looking to fill three teacher vacancies, one nurse position and 10 instructional aide positions.

Hines said Krise Transportation representatives reported three bus drivers are not expected to return for 22/23, but they have sufficient numbers of new employees enrolled in CDL training to cover these positions.
