Penn Hills firetruck lights illuminate this Southern Avenue home that was struck by a tree Thursday evening.

The American Red Cross is assisting a Penn Hills couple after a large tree fell into their home Thursday evening.

Penn Hills Fire Chief Joe McMeekin said crews were called to the 700 block of Southern Avenue around 8:40 p.m.

They found a huge tree that fell from the rear of the home and crashed through the roof. Limbs crashed into an upstairs bedroom.

Fortunately, McMeekin said the couple were on the first floor at the time and were uninjured.

The chief thinks storms Thursday and the past few months maybe softened the ground to the point where it could no longer hold back the massive tree. Firefighters were still on the scene after 10 p.m.

According to an incident report posted by Penn Hills No. 7 VFC on Facebook, crews found significant structural damage and deemed the building uninhabitable.

McMeekin said Penn Hills code enforcement and the homeowner’s insurance company is expected to evaluate the home.

It was unclear when the tree may be removed.
