Goodwill officials have planned a hiring event and announced the opening date of their new Penn Hills location.

The store and donation center in the Penn Hills Shopping Center off Rodi Road is set to open Oct. 30.

A hiring event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the shop next to Planet Fitness.

Michelle Zajac, director of human resources at Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania, offered a message about this month’s activities.

“Our Penn Hills store is opening soon and we are still seeking job seekers who want to be part of our team,” she said. “Come change the world with us.”

Walk-ins are welcome at the hiring event. All new employees are eligible for a $300 sign-on bonus, $100 bonus at 30 days of employment and $200 bonus at 90 days of employment.

Computers will be available at the event to apply in person. Those interested can apply online at goodwillswpa.org/work-at-goodwill.

Goodwill officials have worked on establishing a location in Penn Hills for quite some time, according to David Tobiczyk, vice president of marketing and development for Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

A deal to move in to the center off Rodi Road was struck over the summer, and construction began in August.

Tobiczyk said about 20 jobs would be created at the new store.

“Penn Hills has always been a good area and a good fit that we thought we could look into,” Tobiczyk said. “We’ve had a lot of shoppers from the area saying it would be a good location. We know there’s likelihood there are a lot of donors to make it an excellent location.”

The retail entrance faces the main shopping center parking lot. The donation center entrance will be behind the Giant Eagle.

Mayor Pauline Calabrese said last month after Goodwill’s previous hiring event that she is excited to welcome a new business in town.

“I think it’s fabulous,” she said. “Anytime a business comes into our community, it’s a good thing. … I love that they offer a good service. And it also brings people from outside of Penn Hills into our community so they can see us first hand, whether someone’s coming into shop there or make donations.”

Clothing and household goods are among the most needed items. Large furniture will not be accepted.

The nearest Goodwill locations to Penn Hills include an outlet store and donation center in Monroeville.
