Masks are still required for students and staff in Penn Hills School District.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s Dec. 10 decision affirmed a lower court ruling that the state’s acting secretary of health did not have the authority to issue a mandatory mask mandate for schools in August. The ruling ended the mandate effective immediately. Going forward, school districts can implement their own making policies as they see fit.

In a Dec. 10 posting on the district’s website: ”Despite the court position released earlier today, our Board-approved Health and Safety Plan holds until our Board changes or nullifies the Plan. That includes wearing masks while indoors on school district property.”

The posting continues that the district plans to follow through with its established plan to poll families and staff before winter break. The school board will revisit its current Health and Safety Plan language during its Jan. 12 and Jan. 26 meetings.
