Penn Hills School District officials have canceled their senior celebration due to Allegheny County’s increased restrictions during the covid-19 pandemic.

County officials recently renewed restrictions on gatherings to 25 people or less and implemented voluntary stay-at-home protocols for residents, because of spikes in coronavirus cases.

District officials said they had to cancel the celebration planned for Thursday at Yuhas-McGinley Stadium as a result.

The event was an effort to replace prom, which was canceled earlier this year due to the pandemic.

However, an in-person graduation is still scheduled for 6:30 p.m. July 17 at the stadium.

Seniors should report to the field no later than 6 p.m. and may bring only two guests.

Graduates will be ushered to the football field, and guests can sit in the bleachers at least 6 feet apart.

Everyone on district property is required to wear a mask.

District officials said the ceremony will be virtual if the current restrictions remain in place next week.

“We know this year has included many disappointments for our Class of 2020,” said Superintendent Nancy Hines via a district post. “District staff truly hope we will be able to offer a traditional commencement ceremony on site at our football stadium, as we know that format is preferred among our seniors and their families.”

More information can be found on the district’s website, phsd.k12.pa.us.
