A Plum heating, cooling and roofing company with Penn Hills roots is celebrating an anniversary milestone by giving back to the community.

Schultheis Bros., 1001 Millers Lane, will be holding a “Great Roof Giveaway” to celebrate its 75th anniversary. Founded in 1946 by brothers Bill and Richard Schultheis, the pair wanted to start a company in Penn Hills on Fifth Street after serving in the U.S. Navy.

General Manager Katie Rullo, whose grandfather is Richard Schultheis, is a third-generation employee. She has wanted to do a giveaway to give back for a while and said she hopes to make this one annual.

“I wanted to do this in recognition of my grandfather’s generosity,” Rullo said. “He is always giving back to others.”

The giveaway includes the winner receiving a 20-panel roof valued at $10,000.

Nominations for a homeowner to receive a roof can be submitted through Aug. 30. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and a homeowner. You can nominate yourself or someone else who lives within a 20-mile radius of the 15239 zip code. Judges will announce three finalists Sept. 7 and choose one winner to have a roof installed in October.

“We thought it would be best if we let people nominate someone so then you know that person really needs a roof,” Rullo said.

Susie Schultheis, a staff member and daughter of Richard Schultheis, said it has been a privilege to work with the family. She is proud of the company celebrating 75 years and commemorating that with a giveaway.

“I am so glad we are doing something like this that is supporting the company,” she said.

The roof giveaway will not be the last time the company gives back as it plans to do year-round giveaways including a winter giveaway with a furnace and a spring giveaway with air conditioning. Rullo said they are also looking to partner with a local breast cancer organization to do a roof giveaway in October for someone who has breast cancer.

”We are really excited to get this together and give back,” Rullo said.
