Gyms and fitness centers in Allegheny County can reopen under strict guidelines now that the area was moved into the green phase of the state’s economic reopening plan.

However, Snap Fitness franchises in Plum and Verona appear to have closed their doors for good.

Franchisee Mike Mettee took to Facebook to update his members on the future of the 24-hour facilities.

“It is with tremendous disappointment and much sadness that I must announce that we will not be capable of re-opening our fitness facility,” Mettee posted Wednesday. “As you are aware, we closed the club on March 16 due to state mandates issued because the the covid-19 pandemic. We initially had hoped to re-open once these mandates were lifted.”

Mettee said while some members were eager to return, more were not ready or capable to come back resulting in a tremendous loss of revenue.

“Additionally, the restrictions put in place to operate safely, significantly increases the cost to run the facility,” the post reads. “In our particular case in PA, we could not afford to operate as a 24/7 facility.”

He said restrictions included cutting occupancy in half and maintaining social distancing. A continuous cleaning and disinfecting regiment was also prohibitive.

“The combination or these facts, along with the fact that we have had to continue to pay for our lease, utility, phone, internet and various other expenses while we have been closed, have forced us to make this difficult business decision,” he said. “For those of you who have balances on your extended pre-paid memberships, we will be contacting you to arrange reimbursement your unused portion … Hopefully, once this pandemic issue clears up, our paths will pass again.”

Mettee also thanked the communities for letting the gyms serve them the past 12 years.

The Verona Snap Fitness was located in the shopping plaza with Giant Eagle along Allegheny River Boulevard.

The Plum location was along the 2800 block of Golden Mile Highway.

Calls to both locations and an email to its corporate office made during the week were not returned as of Friday.
