Verona's Farmers Market opens for the season with new safety precautions
Tents were spaced out farther than usual and vendors wore masks at Verona’s Farmers Market during the first event of the season.
“We were a little nervous we wouldn’t be able to open,” market organizer Stefani Garibay said Thursday afternoon. “A lot of these guys depend on making their living through these markets. That was a concern of ours. Obviously, wearing masks in the heat is going to be a little bit of a struggle, but (we’ll do) anything we can to help our community and each other. We’ve go a lot of advice from the Allegheny County Health Department.”
Garibay said she recently participated in a webinar with health department officials and Bloomfield farmers market organizers on how to have a safe event during the covid-19 pandemic.
Several ideas, including a one-way path for patrons, came out of those discussions.
The entrance to the Verona market along East Railroad Avenue is at the pavilion, with the exit at the borough building parking lot. Signs promoting social distancing were also installed. Vendors parked their vehicles by their booths to help people from wandering around.
Larry Musser of Schramm Farms & Orchards in Jeannette said staffers bag all items so customers do not touch the produce prior to purchase. Tables are thoroughly cleaned before new fruit and vegetables are put on display.
He said the farm’s been involved in the Verona market for at least 10 years.
“It’s a good market down here,” Musser said. “People are nice. I think it’s a good idea (to have it).”
Attendance was low Thursday afternoon. Looming clouds and the threat of rain may have played a role, but it didn’t stop Tim and Nancy Bendorf of Oakmont from picking up some goods.
“I think it’s time,” Nancy Bendorf said about going to markets. “I have no problem with it at all. We like to support local businesses, local farmers (and get) fresh, healthy food.”
Verona’s market is open from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursdays through Nov. 19. Admission and parking are free.
Other vendors include Jewelry by Susi, Tom’s Candy Co., Up in Suds, Crafted Treasures and Designs by Becka.
Volunteers and vendors are wanted. Interested parties can send emails to sgaribay16@gmail.com.
