Residents of Oakmont, Verona and most of Plum will vote for a new state representative on Feb. 7.

The special election for the 32nd state House district is one of three scheduled for that day in Allegheny County. The others are for the 34th and 35th districts.

Only residents registered to vote in those districts will participate in the elections. Information on the elections is available online.

A special election is being held in the 32nd District because of the death of state Rep. Tony DeLuca, D-Penn Hills, who was 85 when he died in October from lymphoma.

Despite his death, DeLuca’s name remained on November ballots because it was too late to change them. He won by a more than 6-to-1 margin over Green Party candidate Queonia “Zarah” Livingston; there was no Republican candidate.

In addition to all of Oakmont and Verona and part of Plum, the 32nd District includes all of Penn Hills. About 46,400 voters are registered in the district, according to Allegheny County.

Plum precincts 00-01 through 00-03, 00-07 and 00-17 through 00-21 are in the 32nd District.

Part of Plum is in the 25th state House district and represented by Brandon Markosek.

Residents can check their voter registration and the precinct list to determine whether they are involved in the special election. They also can use the “find your legislator” service at legis.state.pa.us to find their state House district.

Joe McAndrew of Penn Hills is the Democratic nominee for the seat. Clayton Walker of Verona is the Republican nominee.

According to the Department of State, Livingston filed nomination papers as an independent for the special election, but they were rejected because she did not provide them in the proper format.

McAndrew is a former executive director of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee. He worked on Congressman Chris Deluzio’s 2022 campaign and for former Democratic House Minority Leader Frank Dermody from 2012-14.

Walker is an Army veteran and pastor at Mustard Seed Church.

The vacancy in the 34th District was created by the resignation of former state Rep. Summer Lee, who was elected to Congress in the 12th District of Pennsylvania. The district includes all of Braddock, Braddock Hills, Chalfant, Churchill, East Pittsburgh, Edgewood, Forest Hills, North Braddock, Rankin, Swissvale, Wilkins and Wilkinsburg, and part of Pittsburgh.

The vacancy in the 35th District came from the resignation of Austin Davis, who was elected lieutenant governor. The district includes all of Clairton, Duquesne, Homestead, Liberty, Lincoln, McKeesport, Munhall, Port Vue, South Versailles, Versailles, West Homestead, Whitaker and White Oak, and part of West Mifflin.

The last day to register for the special election is Jan. 23.

The last day to apply for absentee or mail-in ballots is Jan. 31, and the last day to return absentee or mail-in ballots is Feb. 7, according to Allegheny County.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
