Coronavirus numbers tallied for Penn-Trafford area
Recent state data shows there have been 553 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the Penn-Trafford area since the start of the pandemic in March, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The health department on Sunday released data on confirmed cases of the virus in the six Penn-Trafford area ZIP codes, showing an increase of 78 positive cases since Nov. 3.
The health department keeps a count of coronavirus cases and test results for communities based on ZIP codes.
The largest number of cases, 280, originated in the 15644 ZIP code, which includes Jeannette and parts of Penn Township. It has increased by 40 since this time last week.
The 15085 ZIP code, which encompasses Trafford, shows 121 confirmed cases, up 20 from last week.
There have been 90 confirmed cases in the 15636 ZIP code, which includes the Harrison City neighborhood.
The Manor (15665), Clairidge (15623) and Penn (15675) ZIP codes have seen 35, 14 and 13 cases, respectively.
The data also show 5,397 negative test results in those five areas. With a total of 5,950 tests, just over 9% have come back positive.
The Penn-Trafford School District has undergone multiple school closures this year due to confirmed virus cases in its buildings. Just over 60 students and staff members have tested positive since the school year began.
According to the state’s tracking website, in Westmoreland County there have been 6,020 confirmed cases, 1,626 probable cases, 60,550 negative tests and 167 deaths since the outbreak began.
Westmoreland has added 892 cases in the past week of testing. For purposes of comparison, that is more cases in one week than the county saw from March through July.
Despite a small spike in late June and early July, the county’s daily confirmed case counts had remained relatively low until a sharp uptick beginning in late September. That number went back and forth, but has remained much larger than in the pandemic’s early stages, reaching an all-time single day high of 249 positive cases reported on Nov. 18.
