Covid numbers tallied for Penn-Trafford-Jeannette area
The Penn-Trafford-Jeannette area saw an 8% jump in confirmed covid cases over the past week, with the addition of 107 cases, based on data from the state Department of Health.
The health department counted 1,417 confirmed covid cases in the six ZIP codes covering much of the three communities as of Jan. 7, up from 1,310 as of Dec. 29.
The tally of coronavirus cases dates back to March, the beginning of the covid crisis in the region.
There have been 763 confirmed coronavirus cases, up 59 cases since Dec. 29, in the Jeannette 15644 ZIP code, which covers part of Penn Township. There have been 330 probable cases and 3,827 coronavirus tests with negative results.
In the 15085 ZIP code, which encompasses Trafford and part of North Huntingdon, the state found 322 confirmed cases as of Dec. 29. There were 102 probable cases in that ZIP code and 1,542 negative test results since March.
The Harrison City 15636 ZIP code, there have been 187 confirmed cases, 73 probable and 746 negative coronavirus test results as of Dec. 29, the state said.
The Manor 15665 ZIP code had 78 confirmed cases as of Jan. 7, 34 probable cases and 277 negative test results.
The Penn Borough 15675 ZIP code had 34 confirmed cases, 22 probable cases and 188 negative test results.
In the Claridge 15623 ZIP code, there were 33 confirmed cases, six probable and 201 negative test results.
With a total of 8,765 covid tests taken by residents in the six ZIP codes, 16.2% have been positive.
A significant portion of Penn Township is also grouped under the Irwin 15642 ZIP code, but the ZIP codes are not drawn to cover municipal borders.
According to the state’s tracking website, in Westmoreland County there have been 15,045 confirmed cases, 5,120 probable cases, 74,198 negative tests and 435 deaths since the outbreak began.
Despite a small spike in late June and early July, the county’s daily confirmed case counts had remained relatively low until a sharp uptick beginning in late September. That number went back and forth, but has skyrocketed far beyond the pandemic’s early stages, reaching an all-time single-day high of 747 positive cases reported on Dec. 10.
Half of the county’s covid-related deaths occurred last month.
