A Penn-Trafford student filled a set of book shelves with free school supplies for students at Westmoreland County Community College’s Youngwood campus to earn a high honor as a Girl Scout.
Addison Montenary, 14, of Harrison City, recently placed the blessing box — book shelves stocked with supplies such as pens and pencils, notebooks and paper — in the front entrance of Commissioners Hall on the campus. Students may take the free items for their use, in hopes others will replenishing them, said Addison’s mother, Allison Montenary.
A ninth grader at Penn-Trafford, Montenary is a Cadette in Girl Scouts and she did the project as part of her efforts to earn a Girl Scout Silver Award. She has the opportunity to win the Gold Award in four years.
The 14-year-old worked on the project for about six months and raised the money to buy the book shelves and supplies by having a bake sale. The project cost about $150.
“She saw a need for the blessing box,” Allison Montenary said.
