Lions Club to hold election day food drive

The Manor Lions Club will hold an Election Day Food Drive on Nov. 2 to support the Manor Food Pantry.

Donation boxes will be placed at the Manor Polling Station and the Manor Community Building.

Voters are asked to bring nonperishable food donations or monetary donations.

Theatre Factory to host Halloween play

The Theatre Factory invites those attending this month’s production of “I Want My Mummy” to dress just like the monstrous characters.

The musical, which runs Oct. 23-24 and Oct. 30-31, centers around the Baroness Frankenstein, who opens her castle to the monsters of world that are having trouble fitting in with society.

Tickets are $10 and attendees are invited to wear Halloween costumes and to meet the cast for photos and autographs after the show.

Purchase tickets at OntheStage.tickets by choosing “theatre ticketing” under the “platform” menu, and entering “I Want My Mummy” into the search box at the bottom of the page.

The theater is at 235 Cavitt Ave. in Trafford.

Trafford Middle School gets literacy grant

The Trafford Middle School was awarded a $750 grant from the Dollar General Foundation to support youth literacy initiatives.

The grant was secured by Elizabeth Somes, library aide, and Melissa Matis, an English/language arts teacher.

“A love of reading, and a strong foundation of literacy, is built through choice. We are excited to be able to offer our students a myriad of options that are tailored to their interests and reading level,” Matis said.

This local award is part of more than $3 million in grants given this fall to nearly 760 nonprofit organizations, libraries and schools across the 46 states served by Dollar Genera.

Penn-Trafford schools recognized

Two of Penn-Trafford’s schools reached the top 10 in a recent ranking, placing them in the highest one-half percent in the state among 1,750 public and charter elementary schools in Pennsylvania.

The ranking report released by “U.S. News & World Report” had all five of Penn-Trafford’s elementary schools ranked in the top 7%: McCullough Elementary- No. 6; Sunrise Estates — No. 7; Harrison Park — No. 37; Level Green — No. 58; and Trafford —- No. 11.

The rankings were calculated based on state assessment data in math and reading/language arts, according to the news magazine.
