P-T students donate to animal rescue group
Trafford Middle School students in seventh and eighth grades raised $353 for the Helping Hearts/Healing Tails Animal Rescue of Westmoreland County, and several donated items.
Stacy Lamanna, middle school art teacher, held ‘Pet Penny Wars’ during April to inspire students to collaborate on creative animal sculptures and to raise money for a local animal shelter. Students were challenged to create dog or cat sculptures in the style of Tube Dude artist Scott Gerber. Students were only permitted to use cardboard tubes from paper towels and toilet paper.
The sculptures were displayed with a jug for depositing coins. Every penny deposited earned a point for that sculpture, but nickels, dimes and quarters scored against the sculpture. Sculptures with the most points were declared winners.

The volunteers included Boy Scouts and the leaders of Boy Scout Troop 201, as well as the pastor and parishioners from Level Green Presbyterian Church and Little League baseball players, according to Bruno Mediate, a member of the Lions Club.
As trash was being collected, the fire department provided four trucks which followed participants along their routes. The firemen picked up the bags of trash and returned them to the community building for disposal.
