P-T gets donation for sensory learning items
Melissa Wise, a special education teacher at Penn-Trafford’s Level Green Elementary School, has acquired an assortment of new materials to meet the sensory needs of her students.
Wooden puzzles, a pots and pans play set, pop beads, a weighted puppy lap pad, paints and brushes, and several other helpful items were purchased through a grant of approximately $500 from the nonprofit DonorsChoose, which operates a website where donors can select what teacher-posted projects they want to support.
“My nonverbal students rely on sensory items to calm themselves and ready themselves to learn,” Wise said. “They use ‘toys’ to learn activities of daily life, as well as to learn basic information like colors and shapes.”
DonorsChoose has brought nearly $160,000 into Penn-Trafford School District, said Colleen Kelly, a Penn-Trafford spokeswoman.
