Pine-Richland calls on students to help shape curriculum

The Pine-Richland School District is relying on its most valuable asset to help with resources to support the English Language Arts curriculum for ninth graders — they are asking student’s for their input to choose which book will be used.

“We’re encouraging our high school students if they’re interested, not required, but if they’re interested to read one or more of those books, and then provide us feedback,” said assistant superintendent of schools of secondary education and curriculum Michael Pasquinelli at the Sept. 18 school board meeting.

The books for consideration are “All My Rage” by Sabaa Tahir, “Angel of Greenwood” by Randi Pink, “I Must Betray You” by Ruta Sepetys and “We Are Not Free” by Traci Chee.

As part the district’s annual evaluation of resources, the school is reassessing the English and Language Arts for grades six to nine. While student and parent input has been a factor in the administrations process of shaping curriculum and the materials to support the curriculum, this will be the first time that Pine-Richland will incentivize students.

Students in grades nine through 12 can read any of the four proposed books and scan a QR code to share their feedback. Upon submitting their evaluations, they will be entered into a drawing to win prizes.

“Since this is a voluntary option for our students and they are already busy with their academic and extracurricular activities, we thought some small incentive such as dance tickets or tickets to sporting events may encourage more engagement,” said director of communications Erin Hasinger.

Students have until Oct. 26 to submit their feedback.

“The heaviest weight in considering the final recommendation comes from our professional staff but student, parent and community feedback is considered,” Hasinger said.
