Pine-Richland student accolades for the week of May 2, 2023
Pine-Richland High School junior Jocelyn Curreri placed first in the state National History Day competition in the Individual Exhibit Category for her project on Hedy Lamarr. Jocelyn has been invited to participate in the national NHD competition to be held June 11–15 at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Ain Shajihan was among the 141 Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Medicine students to learn their medical residency match during a celebration for National Residency Match Day, held on March 17, 2023. Shajihan will be serving an internal medicine residency at Inova Fairfax Hospital-VA in Falls Church, Va. Shajihan is currently a fourth-year medicine student at NEOMED, and will move on to the residency following graduation on May 6.
Liz Hood, a Slippery Rock University graduate student majoring in occupational therapy from Gibsonia, was elected as vice president of diversity and inclusion of the Slippery Rock Student Government Association.
Paige Longmore recently competed in an Intercollegiate Dressage Association Show held at the University of Findlay’s James L. Child Equestrian Complex. Longmore won third place in Intro Dressage Seat Equitation.
Tomas Mueller was recently initiated into the Grove City College Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society. The Society welcomed 787 new initiates from 32 universities in March.
Donald Professori recently participated in the University of Findlay’s 2023 Symposium for Scholarship and Creativity. Professori presented “Pulse Student Media Analysis and Proposals for Future Growth.”
Pine-Richland High School senior Grace Neuhart, who is studying ad design at A.W. Beattie, won a $1,000 Rex Wright Memorial Scholarship in Pennsylvania’s SkillsUSA competition April 12 in Hershey.
Pine-Richland High School junior Alijah Christner was part of a three-person team that took first place at the SkillsUSA state competition for Career Pathways Showcase: Industrial and Engineering Technology. His team will go on to compete at the National SkillsUSA Conference in Atlanta in June.
Eleven Pine-Richland High School French students placed on the National French Exam, competing against students across the country, including ninth graders Sanika Das (silver), Deeya Nayaar (silver) and Kelsey Neill (bronze), sophomores Ian Bowen (silver) and Eliza Lazarro (bronze), juniors Udi Akolkar (honorable mention), Chloe Chiang (honorable mention), Aiden Jones (honorable mention), Matteo Rovera (bronze) and Brianna Thel (honorable mention), and senior Jack Exline (bronze).
Two Pine-Richland Middle School seventh graders won awards at the 84th Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair on March 28 at Carnegie Science Center. Sonaya Arora placed first in the Intermediate Division for Physics and Astronomy and second for Student Choice Award. Sonaya also won an affiliate award from the US Metric Association. Her project was called “Does Viscosity of Fluids Have an Effect on the Efficiency of a Hydraulic Lift?” Ulrich Johnsen placed second in the Intermediate Division for Behavioral and Social Science for his project called “Sound Psychology.” Both students have been nominated to participate in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, where they can showcase their research at the national level and compete for awards and cash prizes. This competition is considered the nation’s premier STEM research competition for middle school students. Only the top 10% of students competing at affiliated fairs each year are nominated to enter.
