The Pine-Richland girls JV and varsity soccer team gathered Oct. 25 to present a $1,000 check to the Glimmer of Hope Foundation.
All 34 players met before practice to hand the check over to Glimmer of Hope Founder and President Diana Napper and Associate Director Alexis Curran. Glimmer of Hope is a Pittsburgh-based advocacy group dedicated to fighting breast cancer.
Pine-Richland Girls Soccer Boosters President Bobbi Betush was in attendance along with Kelly Ozelski and Kim Roskoph.
“We pick one game each October as a fundraising game. The girls all purchase shirts, and we had shirts for sale. Then we went within the community and asked for donations from a lot of the local businesses. We created different raffle bags and baskets and as people came into the game, we asked them to purchase tickets,” said Ozelski.
The donation was made in the memory of MaryLou Shenot, a well-loved alumna of Pine-Richland and former member of the Pine-Richland and North Allegheny communities. MaryLou and her husband lived on and owned Shenot Farm n Market, located in Wexford. The Shenot Farm is a well-known spot for field trips, apple picking and a pumpkin patch.
Glimmer of Hope was started in 1994 by Napper to ‘honor the wishes of her best friend, Carol Jo Weiss Freidman, who lost her battle with the disease in 1990,’ according to the foundation’s website.
“We are a Pittsburgh-based breast cancer foundation that does really unusual things,” said Napper. “We buy equipment, we start programs, we have the first metastatic breast cancer center in Western Pennsylvania.” The group partnered with Magee Women’s Hospital to start screening women before they are 40, because there is no protocol for that, Napper added.
