Brooke Deegan, a Pine-Richland High School sophomore, was one of 10 students nationwide selected as a winner in the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History’s Hamilton Education Program Online Competition.

The competition asks students to create an original song about an event in American history. Brooke, in the spirit of the musical “Hamilton,” wrote and performed “Song of Liberty,” a poetic retelling of the Boston Tea Party.

Her creativity earned her an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City for her and a parent to see “Hamilton,” participate in a question-and-answer session with the cast and a go on a guided tour of the Museum of Broadway.

TEAMS winners

Three Pine-Richland Middle School teams took the top three spots in the state in the annual Technology Student Association TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) Competition.

The seventh-grade team of Sahil Dangwani, Katie Gliptis and Lydia O’Leary placed third. The eighth-grade team of Soha Garg, Sailesh Senthil and Owen Tan placed second, and the eighth-grade team of Sonaya Arora, Piya Dargan and Lizzie Feterik placed first.

All three teams qualified for the national competition in June.

Scholastic writing awards

Six Pine-Richland High School students won awards for writing in the regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition: seniors Logan Blackwell, poetry, and Sophia DeJesus, short story and poetry; juniors Aurelia Landis, short story, and Siena Yoon, science fiction and personal essay; and sophomores Elizabeth Leibe and Brooke Deegan, both for poetry.
