A 10th resident has died from the coronavirus at the Kane Regional nursing home in Glen Hazel, according to data from Allegheny County.

Of 96 residents tested for covid-19 at the county-owned long-term care facility, 62 have tested positive for the virus.

Seven residents have been hospitalized, and 22 have recovered. Kane officials are considering a resident recovered when: It has been at least 14 days since the onset of symptoms or a positive test; the resident has been without symptoms for at least three days; and the resident’s doctor agrees they have recovered.

The Glen Hazel location is the only Kane facility to experience such an outbreak. One resident in the McKeesport facility has tested positive.

Thirty-six staff members at Glen Hazel have tested positive for the virus out of the 74 who were tested. Four tests are pending. One employee tested positive at each of the other Kane locations: Scott, McKeesport and Ross.

Cases among the residents and staff in Glen Hazel began spiking earlier this month, several weeks after a staff member there tested positive.

Long-term care facilities have been a hot spot for covid-19 cases in the state and nationwide because of the congregate living situation and the particular vulnerability of the elderly and those with underlying conditions.

More than half of Pennsylvania’s 1,597 covid-19 deaths — 990 — have been in nursing home residents. As of Monday, there were 7,037 cases across 441 facilities. On top of that, 862 employees at those facilities have contracted the virus.

In Allegheny County, 257 residents at 31 care facilities have tested positive, as have 84 employees. Countywide, 58 nursing home residents have died from the virus.

In Westmoreland County, 131 residents in seven care facilities have tested positive, along with 28 employees. Nineteen facility residents have died.
