A Duquesne police car collided with a Port Authority bus at Duquesne Boulevard and Grant Avenue on Saturday, April 6, 2019. Police said the officer was pursuing a speeding vehicle; three people on the bus were hurt.

A Duquesne police officer crashed his marked patrol car into a Port Authority bus while chasing a speeder Saturday afternoon, the department said.

The crash happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. at Duquesne Boulevard and Grant Avenue.

The officer involved, who was not identified, was not hurt but was taken to a hospital for evaluation under department policy.

Three people on the bus complained of minor injuries and were checked at a hospital, police said.

On its Facebook page, the Duquesne Police Department said the officer was monitoring traffic along Duquesne Boulevard at Duquesne Plaza when he clocked a vehicle traveling south at 70 mph in a 35 mph zone.

The officer pulled onto the highway and activated his emergency lights and siren. The speeding vehicle continued through the intersection at Grant Avenue, where the traffic light changed from yellow to red.

A Port Authority bus on Grant Avenue had a green light and turned north onto Duquesne Boulevard.

“The bus driver was unaware of the approaching police car until the bus was in the intersection,” Duquesne police said. “The officer attempted to stop and swerved into the slow lane in an attempt to avoid the collision. The officer was unable to stop and collided with the rear driver’s side of the bus.”

A Port Authority representative could not immediately be reached for comment.

Duquesne police said an outside police agency will investigate the crash. What agency that would be was not specified.

“Disciplinary action against the officer may occur pending the outcome of the independent accident investigation,” Duquesne police said.
