Police: 3 hurt when car flips while fleeing gunfire after McKeesport basketball game
A car with four passengers being chased by two men in a pickup truck who were shooting at them hit a utility pole and rolled over Tuesday night in McKeesport, Allegheny County police said.
Three of four people in the car, including two teens, were injured.
Investigators said the incident began shortly before 9 p.m. as the occupants of the car left a basketball game at McKeesport High School. Two of the injured teen occupants are Woodland Hills High School students, according to the principal Phillip Woods.
Two men in a silver Ford F150 followed the car onto Washington Street and began firing at them, police said.
The car hit a utility pole as it tried to escape and flipped onto its roof, landing in the front yard of a home in the 900 block of Washington Street.
Police said a number of parked vehicles along the road were struck by the barrage of bullets.
A 16-year-old girl was transported by ambulance to a hospital in critical condition. Two other passengers — a 15-year-old girl and a 26-year-old man — were taken to the hospital in a private vehicle and were in stable condition.
The teens are Woodland Hills High School students, officials said. They had just left a basketball game between McKeesport and Woodland Hills.
“This morning we were notified that the teenage passengers in last night’s car accident were Woodland Hills students,” Woods said in a statement on Wednesday. “The District has been in contact with the families and will continue to do so as the students recover from their injuries. The Woodland Hills School District values the safety and well-being of all community members. If your child has been upset and/or showing signs of distress related to this incident, they are encouraged to speak with one of our social workers or a trusted adult in the school.”
The 40-year-old driver of the car was not hurt.
None of the victims suffered gunshot wounds.
Authorities have not identified any suspects and said they are unsure of the motive for the shooting.
Investigators said the vehicle from which the shots were fired is a silver 2011 Ford F150 Platinum with a moon roof and tonneau cover bearing Pennsylvania license plate KKA-1469.
