5 things to do in Pittsburgh this weekend: Jan. 17-19

Winter is really here here. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get out of the house and do something fun this weekend. Here are some options in Pittsburgh:

Jam on

Winter Jam is a night of Christian music at PPG Paints Arena. The tour’s headliner is Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Crowder. His hits include “Red Letters” and “All My Hope.” Crowder has sold more than 3 million units and appears regularly at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn. Joining him are Hillsong Young & Free, Andy Mineo, Building 429, RED, Austin French, NewSong and Zane Black. The Pre-Jam Party artists are Riley Clemmons, Ballenger and Zauntee.

Birthday celebration

Fans of late rapper Mac Miller continue to keep his memory alive with a birthday celebration on Sunday at Stage AE on the North Side. This free event is hosted by The Mac Miller Memoir and small.wOrlds. It features DJ Spillz. Miller died Sept. 7, 2018. Prior to the event, some fans plans to gather at Blue Slide Park in Frick Park for an event hosted by Miller’s friend Britt Bonnivier.

Dine out

Pittsburgh Restaurant Week is winding down. The weeklong event helps boost business during slow periods and introduce chefs’ new dishes to restaurant menus. More than 75 restaurants are participating in the winter promotion. Restaurants can opt to serve $20.20 lunch or specialty options, or $35.20 multi-course fixed-price meals or specialties. The specials end Sunday.

Here are some of the newest participants: Brick Shop in Lawrenceville, Cinderlands Warehouse in the Strip District, Spork in Garfield, Azorean Café in Bloomfield, Bridges and Bourbon and Alihan’s Mediterranean Cuisine, both Downtown, and Condado Tacos, Downtown and Lawrenceville.

Poetry unplugged

The fourth annual Poetry Unplugged takes place Friday night at Pittsburgh’s August Wilson African American Cultural Center, Downtown.

It features spoken word and music with artists from around the country using the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. as inspiration. The event will be hosted by Mahogany Browne and includes featured poets Browne, Jessica Care Moore and Ursula Rucker.

‘Nick Jr. Live!’

“Nick Jr. Live!” and a cast of characters including Dora the Explorer, PAW Patrol and Bubble Guppies comes to Pittsburgh. It is geared toward children ages 1-6, but also has plenty to offer parents, grandparents and even older siblings.

The national touring show, produced by Nickelodeon and Minneapolis-based VStar, will visit Pittsburgh’s Benedum Center for five performances Friday through Sunday.

The audience will have a chance to do the “Pup Pup Boogie” with Blue, the inquisitive canine from “Blue’s Clues.”
