Welcome in the first weekend for 2020. Here are a few ideas for Pittsburgh outings.

Illumination

This is the last weekend to run through sparkling icicles, take a seat in an illuminated horse’s carriage or walk under a tunnel of lights. Lumaze Pittsburgh closes on Saturday.

The indoor holiday festival made its U.S. debut in Pittsburgh at the 31st Street Studios in the Strip District. The studios are housed in an old steel mill.

The 1 million lights took 10 days to set up and a year to plan, English said. This year’s theme is “A Fairytale Christmas.”

There are several spots that lend themselves to photo opportunities from lit-up picture frames to benches inside a carriage or lights formed in the words of LOVE and JOY.

Food trucks!

The fourth annual Food Truck-a-Palooza rolls into the Monroeville Convention Center on Saturday. Presented by GoodTaste! Pittsburgh, the event includes 30 food trucks of various types. Enjoy food from Speals on Wheels, Humus Pittsburgh, Pgh Crepes, Emporio Meatball, Pgh Halal, Burgh Bites, Revival Chili, BG’s Italian Ice, La Palapa, Pattie’s Pastries, Spectro Dolce and Wicked Ribs N’at.

Other activities include an ice bar, beer, spirits, global music and a Kid’s Zone with various games.

A portion of the proceeds benefit the Monroeville Volunteer Fire Co. No. 6, where members will once again walk the site with carbon monoxide detectors for safety reasons.

Edible houses

The Pittsburgh Gingerbread House Competition closes Friday. This annual gingerbread house event moved from PPG Place, Downtown, to a few blocks away at the City-County Building on Grant Street.

The city will continue to award ribbons to winners along with a certificate from Mayor Bill Peduto. The hundreds of entries includes a City-County Building and four replicas of the Port Authority of Allegheny sinkhole bus (the bus that fell in a sinkhole on Oct. 28, Downtown). This is the 17th year for the competition.
