A man and a woman were injured while trying to defend their dog at an Allegheny County dog park on Saturday.
Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs said police and medics were called to North Park Dog Park because of a dog fight and reported bites shortly after 10:15 a.m. Saturday.
Downs said the couple was at the dog park with their dogs when another dog started biting theirs. The couple jumped in to try to break up the fight, and were bit themselves. Downs couldn’t say what breed of dogs were involved in the fight.
North Park, located in Hampton, McCandless and Pine townships, has off-leash areas for dogs. The park is open daily, from dawn until midnight, according to the county’s website.
Downs said the man who was attacked struck the offending dog, and was bit on the left thumb. The injury was minor, and he was treated at the scene.
The woman who was attacked tried to pull at the offending dog’s jaw and was bit a few times, Downs said. The tip of one of the woman’s fingers was bit off, and she was taken to a local hospital for treatment. She has since been released, Downs said.
Downs said the owner of the offending dog left the dog park to separate the animals, but remained in the area and spoke with police.
