Allegheny County has experienced its highest single-day coronavirus case jump after health officials reported 90 new cases Saturday.

No new deaths were reported and the county’s death toll remained at 186.

The new cases bring the grand total of cases in Allegheny County to 2,472.

The previous high was 76, which was reported April 4. The first two cases were reported in the county on March 14.

There have been 381 hospitalizations since that time.

This week has seen a significant increase in new cases for the county, with 61 reported Friday, 37 on Thursday and 45 on both Monday and Wednesday. Tuesday was an outlier with only 19 new cases reported.

Officials said Friday that this week’s surge has been attributed reports of residents traveling throughout the country to the areas of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Houston, Nashville, and cities in Florida such as Miami, Tampa and Naples.

Some of those people also reported that they’d gone to bars and restaurants while visiting those areas. While others reported attending church, going to family gatherings and children’s activities.

“The department has not identified any apparent clusters in the travel destinations or activities,” Allegheny County Health Department Director Debra Bogen said in a statement Friday. “What neither health department investigators nor covid-positive residents know is exactly where or when people contracted the virus. They don’t know if they were exposed before a vacation, while on vacation, or after returning home. They don’t know if they were exposed at a bar or restaurant, or if they were exposed before or after going out.”
