The Allegheny County Health Department reported Saturday that a third person in the county has died from covid-19.
The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Allegheny County jumped by 16% from Friday to Saturday as the countywide total climbed to 552.
County health department officials also reported a third person, in his or her 90s, died of covid-19.
“The third death in the county is an individual in their 90s who had been hospitalized. We extend our sympathies to their family and friends during this difficult time,” the health department said in a news release.
County officials reported 76 new cases Saturday, compared to the 57 new cases reported Friday.
The recent jump in cases reflects a significant increase in testing, officials said.
About 500 people have been tested per day during the past week, a significant increase over the 1,616 tests reported to have been performed on Allegheny County residents since last Thursday.
County officials are releasing some demographic information, including a general age breakdown of cases and where people with confirmed cases of covid-19 live,https://www.alleghenycounty.us/healthdepartment/index.aspx.
More demographic information is expected to be released within the next week.
Of the county’s 552 total cases, the City of Pittsburgh continues to report the most cases, with 175, according to a heat map showing cases throughout the county last updated by officials Friday.
That map does not include a breakdown of cases by city neighborhood or ZIP code.
Among other municipalities, the map showed McCandless had at least 19 cases, Mt. Lebanon, 13, and Baldwin, Richland and Shaler each reported 12.
The state figures will be updated at noon.
