Drinkers in Allegheny County bought the most booze from state stores last year, purchasing more than $309 million worth of wine and liquor from Fine Wine and Good Spirits stores in Allegheny County, according to the latest state report.

In addition, Pittsburgh hosts the general retail location with the highest annual sales. The Fine Wine and Good Spirits store in the East Liberty shopping center Eastside, better known as the place with Whole Foods, had sales of nearly $21 million. It also had the state’s highest transaction count: 383,098.

Among general retail locations, The Waterworks shopping plaza near Aspinwall ranked seventh, with annual sales of $13.7 million. The retail stores in Bethel Park and Cranberry took ninth and 10th place, respectively.

The highest-grossing locations are licensee service centers, which primarily supply restaurants and other customers placing large orders. The Pittsburgh service center at 1601 Liberty Ave. in the Strip District had the state’s third highest sales, $22.7 million. The No. 1 spot was in central Philadelphia, with $43.4 million.

Statewide, wine and liquor sales hit a record $2.67 billion, according to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board’s annual report. Philadelphia County came in with the second-most sales in the state: $256.4 million.

The top-selling spirit category in Allegheny County? Unflavored vodka, mirrored by most counties in the state.

American whiskey was the top in 12 counties, and Greene County was the lone outlier with Canadian whiskey.

Tito’s was the No. 1 unflavored vodka sold across the state. Whipped cream-flavored Pinnacle was the top flavored vodka. Fireball and Jack Daniels were the top-selling Canadian and American whiskeys, respectively.

Allegheny County also sold the most boxed wine in the state.

The annual report – measuring sales and finances from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019 – reported a 3% increase in sales in Allegheny County compared to the previous fiscal year.

Westmoreland County stores did nearly $65.7 million in sales, a modest rise of less than 1% over the previous fiscal year. The county ranked No. 9 in sales statewide.

The three counties with the highest sales – Allegheny, Philadelphia and Montgomery – make up more than 1/3 of all sales in the state.

Allegheny County on its own accounts for just under 14% of sales.
