Allegheny Health Network receives $100k gift for personal protective equipment
Allegheny Health Network received a gift of $100,000 for support during the covid-19 pandemic, the hospital network announced Wednesday.
The money, donated to the network’s Covid-19 Assistance Fund, will be used to buy personal protective equipment and other necessary supplies at AHN Jefferson Hospital in Jefferson Hills.
The gift was made by Bruce and Barbara Wiegand, Pittsburgh natives who live in Naples, Fla. Their daughter, Laura Wiegand, is an orthopedic surgeon at AHN Jefferson Hospital.
“This generous gift speaks directly to their values and those at the heart of our Pittsburgh community,” AHN Chief Philanthropy Officer Allie Quick said in a statement. “Their support will impact so many employees at AHN Jefferson Hospital and ensure members of our community continue to receive the high quality and compassionate care they have come to expect from AHN.”
Bruce and Barbara Wiegand said they were motivated to give since they can’t deliver meals for those in quarantine or drive patients to medical appointments. They wanted to provide immediate financial resources to AHN, and they hope to inspire others to do the same.
“We’re basically in a war against this virus,” said Bruce Wiegand. “It’s time for all of us to do what we can. At our age, we have to be particularly careful and should not risk physical proximity to others, but the monetary option is something we can do.”
In a statement, AHN Jefferson Hospital President Louise Urban expressed gratitude for the gift, which will augment the facility’s supplies and preparedness.
“We are extremely grateful for your act of kindness and the comfort that your gift brings to the AHN Jefferson team during this extraordinary time,” Urban said.
