Robert Scherrer was appointed executive director of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit in February 2020. He started in the position Monday, July 20.

A new executive director took over the Allegheny Intermediate Unit this week, the organization announced Thursday. Robert Scherrer, who has served as an administrator at several local school districts throughout his career, was appointed to the position in February and started work on Monday.

Scherrer will serve as executive director for the next four years, and will play a “pivotal” role in preparing schools for a new school year amid the covid-19 pandemic, according to a news release.

“This school year will be unlike any other that we have experienced before,” Scherrer said in a statement. “The covid-19 pandemic impacts every aspect of a school system. I look forward to working with education leaders throughout the county as we continue to coordinate our efforts on behalf of the children, youth and families whom we serve.

Scherrer previously served as both superintendent and assistant superintendent for K-12 education at North Allegheny School District.

He was principal of both Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy and Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh; and held other administrative positions in the Woodland Hills School District and at Peters Township High School.

He began his career at Baldwin High School.
