Allegheny County Police have charged a McKeesport man in a shooting Saturday in Swissvale that killed a man and sent two other people to area hospitals.
According to court documents, Charlton Mitchell, 21, is charged with homicide and related charges.
The shooting was reported at about 1:45 a.m. in the 7500 block of Ellesmere Avenue, according to the criminal complaint. Officers arrived to find a man with multiple gunshot wounds on the front porch of a home. Officials didn’t immediately confirm the identity of the victim, who was dead at the scene.
According to the complaint, the man’s death was ruled a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. A post-mortem examination revealed he was shot twice in his trunk and once in his buttocks, police said.
Police said a 19-year-old woman was struck by a bullet or fragments during the shooting and suffered a shoulder wound and multiple superficial wounds to her torso.
A 24-year-old man, injured by fragments, had cuts on his temple and arm, according to police. Both were taken to area hospitals.
The woman was listed in critical but stable condition Saturday afternoon, while the man was treated and released, police said
According to court documents, Mitchell initially told investigators he injured his ankle while fleeing from a party at the Ellesmere Avenue residence when he heard multiple gunshots.
Police said Mitchell later provided a different account, stating that he and a friend arrived at the party between 11 p.m. and midnight Friday and that Mitchell pulled a pistol from his holster when he became concerned about his friend’s safety. Mitchell told police that the man who officials said was later fatally shot asked for the gun and then pointed it at his face and told him to get out of his house, according to the complaint.
According to police, Mitchell said he ran from the house, injuring his ankle in a fall, after the man prevented him from retrieving the gun. Mitchell said, as he drove away, he saw the man pointing the gun at his friend’s back, court documents state.
Mitchell told police he retrieved an AR-15-style rifle from vegetation behind a local business and returned to the scene of the party and put on a blue ski mask. According to the complaint, Mitchell said he saw the man who allegedly took his pistol standing outside the front of the home and yelled, “Yo.”
Mitchell said the man reached toward his waistband and Mitchell fired two to three rounds from the rifle before “blacking out” and running from the residence, the complaint states.
Mitchell told police he returned the rifle from where he’d gotten it and threw the mask into a trash receptacle outside his girlfriend’s Homestead residence.
Police said they retrieved the mask and found surveillance video showing Mitchell carrying the rifle.
Mitchell was arraigned early Sunday before District Judge Regis Welsh and was placed in the Allegheny County Jail in Pittsburgh without bail. A preliminary hearing is set for June 12.
