The American Cancer Society is going online this year for its annual Bark for Life of South Hills fundraiser.

Normally held in Pittsburgh’s South Park, the event will be held virtually on April 25 due to covid-19 restrictions.

Dog owners who register are encouraged to take photos of themselves walking their dogs in their neighborhoods and upload them throughout the day.

Awards will be given for the best “Woofstock” costumes of both dogs and owners. The top 12 fundraisers will be featured in the ACS 2021 Bark For Life Calendar.

“Now, more than ever, the American Cancer Society needs the support of the community in order to deliver its mission,” said Shelley Jakell, Bark For Life event committee chairwoman. “This virtual event provides a great way to get some ‘social distancing’ exercise while supporting a great cause. Cancer hasn’t stopped, so neither have we.”

Throughout the event day, photos of dogs and their owners will be complemented with stories of inspiration and hope from event volunteers and cancer survivors.

The American Cancer Society’s 1.5 million volunteers raise funds for breakthrough research, free rides and lodging near treatment, a live helpline and other awareness and impact programs, according to the organization.

Bark for Life registration is $25 per dog. Registrants receive a T-shirt, along with a bandana for their dog.
