A seven-vehicle crash outside the Squirrel Hill Tunnel snarled traffic during Monday’s evening commute.

Emergency dispatchers received a report of the crash on the inbound lanes of Interstate 376 heading toward Pittsburgh about 6:30 p.m., an Allegheny County 911 shift commander said. The crash happened at the inbound entrance on the tunnel’s Swissvale side.

It was not immediately clear if there were any serious injuries.

Medics had not taken anyone to a hospital as of shortly before 7:30 p.m., the 911 shift commander said.

State police and Pittsburgh firefighters responded.

The seven-vehicle incident happened just a few hours after PennDOT crews cleared an earlier crash in the same area.

The first crash was reported at 1:45 p.m. and involved multiple vehicles, 911 dispatchers said. The vehicles involved were cleared from the tunnel at 2:32 p.m. The inbound lanes were closed for about 30 minutes.

PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said to expect major delays related to the evening crash.

Traffic still appeared to be crawling along I-376 in both directions near the Squirrel Hill Tunnel as of shortly before 8 p.m.
